Spring Lawn and Landscape Maintenance Checklist

Your plants have a biological clock, regulated by temperature and sunshine. With the dreariness of winter finally behind us, the sun has begun to grace us with its presence warming the air and soil temperatures. Now is the time to start preparing your lawn and landscape for these seasonal changes.

Lush Lawn PhotoYour lawn is a living, breathing cluster of plants and requires year-round care if you expect strong, healthy results. How you care for your lawn one season will greatly influence its appearance and hardiness the next. Ensuring your turf’s nutritional needs are met in the fall so it can withstand our harsh winters and preparing it now in the spring for summer’s growth and stress from heat.

The biological schedule of your lawn and landscape will not slow down to accommodate your personal schedule. This does not mean you must labor outdoors every day to get the results you want. Just review the following checklist and keep up on regular landscape maintenance so the chores do not build up on you.

  • Service Your Lawn Mower – sharpen the blades or replace with new ones. (I like to have a spare set so I can sharpen when convenient) Change the engine oil, filter and general tune-up (if you did not do so during the winter)
  • Edge Plant Beds –Use a flat edged shovel or rent a mechanical bed knife
  • Clean up leaves and other debris cluttering your beds
  • Plant Annuals
  • Mulch Beds and Tree Rings – Lay fresh mulch in landscape beds and around the base of your trees to discourage weed growth and assist plant roots to retain moisture.
  • Seed Bare Spots in your lawn or overseed (if you did not perform these in the fall)
  • Prevent Weeds by applying a pre-emergent application to both your lawn and landscape beds
  • Apply a slow release fertilizer to promote green up and root growth
  • Spot Treat Weeds as needed – visible weeds now left now will only multiply and lead to increased maintenance and treatment costs laterAerate your lawn (if you did not do so in the fall).
  • Aerate your lawn - Aeration should be done once a year, fall being the optimum time and twice a year, both spring and fall if it has not been done regularly
